All Hail the Clitoris! 6 Facts You May Not Know About Your Pleasure Zone

on October 31, 2022

Recently society has been dismantling the taboo around sexual expression and wellness and allowing women to learn about their bodies and freely express their likes, dislikes, needs, and desires without judgement. While more and more women become vocal about their sexual needs, it has been shown that a lot of women are either embarrassed to talk about their pleasure zone, are not knowledgeable about the subject, or just plain don’t know what its purpose is or where it to start. What am I referring to?

The clitoris!

This pleasure palace, located at the top of your vulva underneath the clitoral hood (or foreskin), is the one body part whose sole purpose is sexual arousal and whose only function is to provide pleasure!

Here are 6 facts about the mighty clitoris that you may not have known:

1.The clitoris is very similar to the penis in that it has a glans, foreskin (the clitoral hood), and a shaft... plus when it’s aroused, it swells…sound familiar?!

 2. It looks similar to a wishbone and is way bigger than it appears, extending deep into the body and measuring between about 3.5 to 4.5 inches long and about 2.5 inches wide.

3. Although there are many types of orgasm (clitoral, G-spot, vaginal, cervical, and anal, to name a few), the majority of women need clitoral stimulation to achieve an orgasm. This causes a lot of women to not have an orgasm during vaginal sex.

4.The clitoris has about 8,000 nerves…which is double the amount the penis has!! Did you hear that.. EIGHT THOUSAND!! No wonder it’s called the pleasure center.

5. Every clitoris is different. Some are hidden, some protrude out. Some are large, others are small. They come in all shapes and sizes. The size and shape of a woman’s clitoris may change with age.

6. The methods and sensations in which you experience and enjoy clitoral arousal may change depending on stress level, where you are in your menstrual cycle at the present time, and even your level of hydration and nutrition.

As you can see, there's more than meets the eye when it comes to the clitoris. It's way more than just that little nub you see peeking through.

Brooklyn is a Post-Partum/Mother-Baby and Pediatric Registered Nurse, turned stay-at-home mom, who is making it her mission to keep women informed on how their individual bodies work, so that they can be their own feminine health advocate when something is 'off' for them. All bodies are different, and women need to know that what's normal for others may not be normal for them, and vice versa. She has personally battled with vaginal and vulva dryness, medication-induced menopause, postpartum depression, and dyspareunia (painful with sex), and has gone through multiple treatments, medications, and even surgery to find relief. It started in her mid-20's which made talking to friends and family difficult, since they couldn't relate. She is focused on helping women find relief, self-advocate while navigating the healthcare system, and stop them from suffering in silence.
